I
was pleasantly suprised when I put this CD in, I guess I wasn't
sure what to expect from them. Celtic Legacy obviously hails
from Ireland, a place perhaps not known for their traditional
Power Metal. (perhaps bands like this will change that one day)
I am mostly impressed with the quality production and all-around
musicianship. Guitarists Dave Morrissey and Keith Hendly provide
a dual guitar attack that reminds me of the greats such as Saxon,
Priest and Iron Maiden. Singer Ciaran Ennis sounds like a more
melodic version of Dickinson, he has amazing range, but sometimes
almost has problems keeping it in check. It's my guess by the
photos he's still quite young so his voice will only get stronger
in time and he's be able to control it better.
From
the sounds of it, the band has already had it's fair share of
member changes. They're fairly tight, but you can tell perhaps
they're still getting things in order. Having said that, their
raw talent is carrying them now and this is still a strong album.
They certainly carry the torch for Ireland and the music has
a "Celtic" flavor to it. The songs are right from
the N.W.O.B.H.M. with powerful choruses and strong melodies.
The backing vocals were a bit to be desired, they maybe tried
to do to much and they weren't produced the greatest, I can't
quite put my finger on what's wrong, but it needs a bit of work.
Overall
I'm very pleased with the band, would they get lost in the shuffle
if not for their Irish background and unique sounds? Maybe,
it's too hard to say and I'm not going to speculate, the bottom
line is that they add a new flavor to the Power Metal scene,
which can sometimes grown stale and unimaginative. Ireland can
be very proud of their native Metalhead Sons for keeping the
past alive while forging ahead into the future.
